THE ORIGAMI CRANE CHALLENGE

The activity of the following two months is a school activity and it will be called “The one thousand origami crane challenge”. Students in different subjects are reading “The one thousand origami crane legend”and we are trying to make 1000 origami cranes. So far we are doing very well…675...we hope to have this activity completed by January 30th “The World Peace Day”.

Here is a summary of the legend of the crane as a symbol of peace.

“Sadako Sasaki was a Japanese girl who survived the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which marked the end of World War II. She was two at the time of the bombings and as a consequence of radiation, Sadako developed leukemia. When she was in hospital she started to make origami cranes inspired by the Japanese legend that says “anyone who folds one thousand paper cranes will be granted a wish”. Unfortunately, Sadako died at the age of 12 without completing the task. Her classmates continued to fold cranes up to one thousand. Then a monument was built in her memorial and the crane became a symbol of peace around the world.”
